5 easy ways to PERSONALIZE YOUR PubMed Toolbar (or any Conduit Toolbar)

Leave out stuff.
Good to know for everybody is that you can at ALL TIMES turn off default features in the PubMed Toolbar. Go to "Toolbar options" via the dropdown button next to the PubMed logo. Choose "Predefined Components" and de-select the component you do not want to see anymore!
Shrink it! Shrink the Toolbar to save space and make your screen more "relax". Via the dropdown button next to the PubMed logo you can select the "Shrink Toolbar" to make icons visible only. Moving the Mouse over the buttons will show the addional information. Of course you can toggle between a shrinked or unshrinked toolbar.
Add personal components, like email notifier, pop-up blocker, Facebook, Weather forecast or Online radio player (with or without NLM podcasts).Go to "Toolbar options" via the dropdown button next to the PubMed logo. Choose "Personal Components" and take your pick
Add Useful Components, like Office Shortcuts, MSN Messenger, Media player etcGo to "Toolbar options" via the dropdown button next to the PubMed logo. Choose "Useful Components" and take your pick
Add stuff to your Toolbar
Use the + on the right side of the toolbar to add apps from the Conduit Marketplace to your toolbar. For instance: the MedlinePlus Search App

The number of daily users is still rising slowly. At the end of August 123 users at trhe same time was the higest use so far. This means 123 users had this PubMed Toolbar open in their browser and actually used it!

PillBox added to NLM Toolbar ; to visually identify pills

"How can I identify a pill" is one of the FAQs at the NLM site. They already offer a nice list of resources, but they launched a new beta service called Pillbox. To visually identify tablets and capsules by imprint, shape, color, size and scoring. http://pillbox.nlm.nih.gov/index.html

Currently they offer two versions:

It is this visual version that I added to the NLM Toolbar. It opens in a floating box that can be placed anywhere on your screen.
Users that already use the Toolbar will spot the Pillbox between the Movies and Messages buttons.
People that are using another Toolbar can ADD just the Pillbox to their own Toolbar by clicking the box/logo below:

37 ways To Adjust Your NLM Toolbar (or any Conduit Toolbar)

Here are just a few ways you can ADJUST your NLM Toolbar once you have chosen to use it.
I am making this overview because the people creating this free toolbar software (Conduit) keep improvingand adding new ways of adjusting the toolbars to give users more possibilities.

During installation you can choose to add 3 personalised buttons to your toolbar (See the picture):

Email-notifier (to get notified of new email on multiple accounts)
Weather button (To see current and predicted Weather in specific location)
Radio-button (To select your own preferences in web-radio ánd to listen to added podcasts via RSS). The NLM Radioplayer contains the podcasts of the NLM Director Comments on MedlinePlus & the NIH Podcast.
(These buttons can at all times be de-activated or actived later on)

You can choose to set the customized websearch from the toolbar as your default search. It makes any search entered in the top-right searchbox (and from the address-bar) run through a Google-powered searchengine. This sounds good, but my advice is NOT to select this option. In my opinion the Google-powered Conduit search is the weakest spot from their toolbar-solution.
You could also set your homepage to this customized web search page, but again, this is not as strong as the normal Google search.
The NLM Toolbar is currently a set of 9 toolbars focussing on NLM services. You can at time toggle between the following toolbars. (NLM, PubMed, PubMedCentral, MedlinePlus, ClinicalTrials, DrugInfo, AidsInfo, DailyMed, HouseholdProducts) This group-function saves a lot of screen space. You just see one toolbar, but can have the power of 9. An edit-options to remove toolbars is available.
If you find any other Conduit Toolbar on the web, an easy Add To Your Toolbars function will ask you if you want to enclose the new toolbar together with the NLM toolbars.
Extensive options to adjust the Toolbar can be found right next to the NLM-logo
Very useful is the SHRINK TOOLBAR toggle option. It takes away all texts next to the buttons, using less space.

  To be abled to add `my own` stuff is one of the most heared request from our many toolbar users. And now Conduit offers this. They made it easy to create toolbar content (more on this, xml-menu's and html gadgets later on) ánd implemented a way to SHARE this through Conduit Open. These elements can be added and removed through the My Stuff-menu.
5. Additional Settings (to select or de-select) :
To complete this long list of options to adjust your Toolbar two small but again useful tips:

you can adjust the size of the NLM search box (the most important toolbar element with 35+ search options from the NLM!) by simply sliding it to the desired size.
At all times you can make the toolbar disappear (or appear again) via the menu View; Toolbars.

A Meebo Chat box in Pubmed Toolbar

The Pubmed Toolbar now contains a Meebo chat Box to offer the growing community of users a direct way to contact eachother.

Some of the advantages of having the Pubmed Toolbar directly visible in your browser are: being abled to see and control the news feeds in the Toolbar, read the new messages, ánd to see right away if somebody is in the Pubmed Meebo chat room. This -and móre- can all be done WITHOUT you having to leave the page(s) and sites you are looking at. No need to install anything, no Meebo account needed, just a click and you can start chatting in the room, or privately. This chatbox opens as a floating window that can be dragged to any corner or place of your screen. It will stay there on top of the windows, even if you decide to leave the sites.
That somebody in the chatroom has also installed the PubMed Toolbar and must be a kindred spirit ... (at least he/she has a simular interest in Pubmed...-)

QuickSearch Box NLM updated

With a big Thank You to one of the users of the NLM Toolbar (http://nlm.ourtoolbar.com/exe) I found out that IE8 is not really coping with the javascript that opens a floating window in the Toolbars i.e. the QuickSearch Box NLM.

But with the relative new feature of the Conduit Toolbars I was abled to add a new gadget on the fly with just the html code in it, et voila..!

This first part of the PubMed Toolbar Screencast by DIGICMB explains the many options users have to adjust the Toolbar Settings to their own liking.
Some options are:

shrink/unshrink toolbar. This leaves only the icons with mouse-over text and saves space
add gadgets (widgets): for business or pleasure
clear your search history
The Toolbar Options has 4 tabs with loads of settings:
Personal Components: email notifyer, privacy, weather, radio(podcasts)
Predefined Components: here you can choose which items of the toolbar you want to toggle on/off. If you do not like the News Ticker, just de-select it here.
Useful Components: Add your own apps buttons on the Toolbar for fast access: All Microsoft Office apps, Paint, MSN, Registry editor etc
Additional Settings: Very useful to set the functionality of the search box for search history, text selection, serch database preference etc.

One Overview, All NLM News

Currently the National Library of Medicine (NLM) Toolbar contains 14 RSS feeds of NLM Services and/or Divisions.
They can be read in one overview from the drop-down News Button and scanned very easily.
Without having to click th button, you can see how many unread items there are. The Toolbar keeps up with your reading, offers a refresh and delete option as well.

Furthermore you can listen - via the Toolbar RADIO to the podcasts of the
MedlinePlus: NLM Director's Comments
and to the NIH Podcasts.
Please let me know if you think something is missing out there.

PubMed Search & News Widget

OK, I think Toolbars are great for quick easy access to search databases, free or licensed databases. Users can use this jumpstart search to get to their preferred search engines direct from their browser window.

But not everybody is allowed to install browser plugins or add-ons.

To distribute the Toolbar functionality like the search & news options, I create derived widgets that can be used as a whole in many social networks, websites and intranet sites, everywhere where it is allowed to put up html.

The PubMed Search & News Widget is the latest one. I just got confirmation from Widgetbox that they approved it.
"Derived" in this case, means, the widget is using the PubMed Toolbar installed custom searches and the installed rss-feed of PubMed New & Noteworthy.

Usage has already doubled since Januari 1st 2009!

A MedlinePlus page has been published in Facebook. Become a fan and distribute the good work of the NLM!
The MedlinePlus toolbar (http://medlineplus.ourtoolbar.com) already has many features from the Medline PLus site, inclusing the cluster search option and the News feed, but is not completely finished. Please pass any suggestions to expand or improve it.

Widgetbox NLM Search box in Internet Explorer

Today I saw a post Ann Kucera from "Web 2.0: Health and Wellness Information " about the NLM Searchbox widget from Widgetbox.
She thinks it's ugly and big ;-(
Ann, i can make you a special NLM Gateway Search box/widget or a selection of your preferred nlm search tools if want. And we can try and make it as simple as YOU want. Just let me know ;-) The base of all this, is the NLM Toolbar that allows me to to tailor-made work within minutes.
Netvibes over Widgetbox
Netvibes is my favourite over Widgetbox. Please try this one.
I will try and find out why the error occurs in IE from Widgetbox.
To add the searchbox into a Blogger HTML Page element just copy and paste html code from <> from the source code. This way you could leave out the extra info and options on the bottom. If you need more info just ask.

NLM Search as Facebook Application

As from today the NLM Search Box is available not only via the Netvibes UWA widget, but also via Widgetbox.com ánd as Facebook Application . It uses the same source file and was ready in 5 minutes. I really wish I had done this sooner, as it turned out to be really easy to make it from a Widgetbox widget into a Facebook app.

There are various brief animated tutorials with audio for using PubMed.

The PubMed Toolbar is not completely finished but can already be used to start quick searches in the Pubmed database, Journal, Mesh, PubMed Help and in the very nice NLM Gateway all-inOne search. Try it via: http://pubmed.ourtoolbar.com.
Or you can use it via the NLM Toolbar that includes all NLM toolbars.

What could I possible add more to it? Please give me your comments and suggestion.

If you think I missed any usefull search option as a direct search option, tell me.
The "grouped" Toolbars that come with the NLM Toolbars are "under construction", but will be completed within the next few weeks.
A more extended introductory movie will be available soon. For now there is only a "quick and dirty" one.
If you need just a selection of the long list of search options of the NLM, focussed on a specific subject or research range, please contact me. You could easily use the NLM SearchBox widget. But having created this complete toolbar, allows me to -fairly easily- create, for a selecting of search engines:

a floating searchbox somewhere on one of the NLM Toolbars, like the QuickSearch on the NLM Toolbar
a searchbox (html) with selected/limited search to be placed on webpage or intranet

The TermFinder option is added to the Searchbox of the NLM Toolbar.

Find terms, their definitions, and related terms, using NLM's MeSH and UMLS Metathesaurus.

Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) is NLM's controlled vocabulary thesaurus. MeSH terminology provides a consistent way to retrieve information that may use different terminology for the same concepts.
NLM's Unified Medical Language System (UMLS) Metathesaurus contains information about biomedical concepts and terms from many sources.

NLM Toolbars : features and options

Purpose and Objectives:

promote services and resources of the NLM in general, including quick-search facilties in all databases.
The Toolbar should be and stay freely available for anybody to use.

Major elements

link homepage: the NLM logo on the left of the toolbar links directly to the NLM website
Search : Basic Usage Steps

select one database from the drop-down menu, available from the small triange in the left corner of the search box.
Type your search term(s).
Activate the search by clicking on the -button.
repeat the search in a different database by changing it from the drop-down menu, available from the small triange in the left corner of the search box. No need to click the -button again.
You can add any text selection from any page directly into the search box. Just select it with your mouse. It will be placed into the box, ready to be searched.
your search history is saved in the drop-down menu in the right corner of the toolbar and can be re-used at will.
Your search history can be deleted/removed via the drop-down menu at the right of the NLM-logo

highlight: highlight your search term(s) by clicking the yellow pencil. It will also offer word count. This option can also be used in any document opened within the browser, even without activating a search.
News: all available News-feed offered by the NLM are listed in this overview.
- The RSS-icon indicates unread news-items.
- Moving your mouse over a specific News-feed show a number of news-items, which can clicked to be linked directly to read more.
- The News-item overview offers options to refresh, delete, mark unread or read.
The Whole NLM: this drop-down menu with sub-menus offers an overview of the NLM products and services
For: this drop-down menu offers direct links to specific target audience overviews
Journals & Books: Overview of the Bookshelf with free e-books, free handheld computer resources and free e-journal via PubMedCentral
Movies: experimental overview of available movies and tutorials.
- movies are shown in "floating" windows that can be minimized or dragged into another place in your screen. It will visible in your screen, even when you browse to other webpages. To drag the window, click and hold your left-mouse-button in the top-region of the window and drag it to the desired place. Click the X to close the window. Click the _ to minimize.
About: shows all information about the NLM organisation and it's departments, including visit and contact information
Radio/Podcast player: The radio player offers MedlinePlus NLM Directors Comments ánd the NIH podcasts to be listened to directly from this toolbar. The player can be minimized and you can add your selection of favorite radio stations.

Toolbar Options: Found by clicking on little triange right of the NLM logo, as indicated in the red mark on the next image
- Upgrade: only appears when a new version or upgrade is available
- Tell a Friend: noticy someone of this tool if you think it is usefull
- Gadgets: fun elements, but also little little info tool are available, to be activated from your toolbar
- Help: Frequently Asked Questions and their answers
- Privacy: Privacy and Security statements and explanations
- Homepage: Example page with all Search facilities, to be used for people who can NOT install the Toolbar for some reason. Including some News-feeds, a chat function to chat with everyone that has this Toolbar installed.
- About: Version information and Toolbar ID
- Contact: Send an email to Costumer Support with a question or suggestion
- Refresh Toolbar: Use this to refresh Toolbar content, for instance to see if there are News-item just published
- Clear Search History: Use this to remove the saved search term that you used previously
- Shrink/UnShrink Toolbar: Shrink the Toolbar to make it even more compressed. To unshrink click again.
- TOOLBAR OPTIONS Menu:
- Personal Components: select or de-select
  - email

  - Online Radio Player: this item is by default included because of the Podcasts of MedlinePlus and the NIH
